Irimawashi (入り廻し)

A type of verse in a Noh chant, or a type of musical notation in a chant book. Noh chants may be broadly divided into tsuyogin, a stronger, more austere chant, and yowagin, a more melodious type of chant. While the treatment of musical scales is also different in tsuyogin and yowagin, they are based on high, middle and low tones. The irimawashi notation includes both iri, the notation for an entrance into a higher scale, and mawashi, the notation indicating the end of an extended note. The treatment of the verses varies depending on the type and contents of the chant, but the iri verse is typically chanted before the mawashi verse.
