Hotokedaore (仏倒れ)

Performance that represents death or falling unconscious. The performer bends over backwards and falls face up, as if being pushed over like a statue of Buddha, hence the name hotokedaore, or “fallen Buddha.” Hotokedaore are often seen in scenes in which the performers lock swords in a duel. To avoid striking their heads on the stage when falling backwards, the performers raise their heads just before the moment of impact.
