Shirabe (調べ)

Tuning of musical instruments done in the room behind the entrance curtain. Usually known as "oshirabe",this is done just before the start of a peformance. The order is fixed, starting with flutes, followed by small tabors, large tabors and drums. It acts as a starting signal and also gets the audience excited. Tuning for programs other than Noh, such as Kyōgen or Mai bayashi (digest performances with music), is done in dressing rooms. There is a similar term, shirabe o, which describes flaxen tension strings between the drumheads of tabors and drums. It is also called shirabe for short.
