Ibayashi (居囃子)

A performance style in which important parts of Noh plays are dance with the inclusion of the hayashi. The ibayashi are performed seated while wearing montsuki or hakama (or occasionally kamishimo). The lines of a performer other than the waki or wakitsure may be sung instead by the jiutai, and parts with aikyōgen are often dropped. As this is a simplified performance style with no movement by the standing actors, one can enjoy the pure beauty of the hayashi. Where movement or dance by the shite is added to the ibayashi, it is known as maibayashi, and where the entire Noh play is performed in the ibayashi style, it is known as banhayashi.
