Densho (伝書)

Books that have been in traditional Noh or kyōgen families for generations. Densho includes not only librettos describing playscripts or movements but also books describing secrets and esoterica. Books handwritten by ancestral performers or about artistic skills to be handed down are especially cherished, as they reflect the uniqueness and the significance of the family. These are often passed down from the father to just one of his sons.
