Hayashikata (囃子方)

The instrumental performers in Noh, the Hayashikata are divided into the fuekata, kotsuzumikata, ōtsuzumikata, and taikokata. Each performer only plays one instrument. Until the Edo era the Hayashikata remained in their seats, but in all modern Noh schools they entertain the audience. There are different schools for each instrument, each with its on strength, the combination of which creates a broad ensemble. Hayashi also perform in certain kyōgen.
