Utsushi (写し)

A copy of an excellent mask or costume that has been passed down from ancient times. The creation of an utsushi, or copy, is known as “taking” or “making an utsushi.” The benefits of creating utsushi include allowing objects of similar beauty to be used in place of those which have become too worn to use, and the passing on of the craft. Utsushi is also used in reference to crating copies of ancient Noh manuscripts.
