Nakairi refers to when the performers step behind the curtain or set between the first and second half of a play to changes masks or costumes. The Shite most often performs the Nakairi, although in certain plays it is also performed by the wakior Tsure. In aikyōgen, a story about the play is often told during the Nakairi. Nakairi also appear in select kyōgenplays.
