Bekka (別火)

A period of purifying fasting and abstention before the performance of Shikisanban (Okina), one of the sacred plays. During bekka, actors performing Shikisanban cook with sacred fire, avoiding the unclean fire typically used by others. Bekka thus means literally “separate fire.” The period of bekka varies, being typically seven or three days, and has become shorter in modern days.
