Kikyoku (稀曲)

Plays that are rarely performed. Both Noh and kyōgen have existing repertoires of well over two hundred plays. These include popular pieces performed several times a year, as well as some that are performed only once every few decades or every century. Plays featuring an old woman (rōjomono) are the most treasured pieces and often became kikyoku. In recent years, such major works have had greater opportunities to be performed and fewer pieces are counted as kikyoku.
