In addition to performing and acting as the kōken and jiutai in kyōgen, the kyōgenkata acts as the ai in Noh, and the furyū, sanbasō, and menbakomochi in shiki sanban (okina). During the Edo era there were three schools, the Ōkura School, Sagi School, and Izumi School, however the Sagi School, at the time considered the masters of Noh, disappeared between the Meiji and Showa eras, and modern performers now belong to either the Ōkura or Sagi Schools. While kyōgenkata are included in the category of nohgakushi, generally they are called kyōgenshi, or kyōgen actors.
