Kakeri, or “anguish dance,” refers to the movement indicating the deranged state of warriors that have fallen into the suffering of the shuradō, crazed women or other delusional characters. The flute, kotsuzumi and ōtsuzumi performance that accompanies these characters are also known as kakeri. Kakeri are characterized by there sudden increased tempo, and are also found in kyōgen performances such as Kanaoka and Rakuami.
