A type of head covering. In addition to eboshi worn to indicate specific roles, such as okina-eboshi, daijin-eboshi, samurai-eboshi (ori-eboshi) and daimyō-eboshi (hora-eboshi), there are many other types that vary depending on role and costume including the kazaori-eboshi worn by noblemen and generals, the nashiuchi-eboshi worn by armoured warriors, the kensaki-eboshi used in sanbasō, and the koyui-eboshi worn by the kokata. The shape of the eboshi is created with washi, traditional Japanese paper, and coated with lacquer to add shape. The colour, in keeping with the name eboshi, or “crow hat,” is often black, although some types are also gold.
