Chū no mai (中之舞)

A basic type of dance in Noh danced between quieter dances and faster dances by shites playing beautiful women, aristocrats and crazed women in various different plays. There are two types of chū no mai, performed with either the fue, kotsuzumi and ōtsuzumi, or a beautiful version which also includes the taiko. While officially danced in five segments, or go dan, chū no mai may also be danced in three segments, san dan. San dan is the official version when danced by the tsure and kokata. Chū no mai danced by a tsure playing the role of a tennyo that include the taiko are known as tennyo no mai.
