Term used in reference to the overall tempo and rhythm of a Noh or kyōgen. The performance can be said to have a “good nori” or “bad nori.” There are also three types of nori when referring to in-rhythm chants, hiranori, chūnori, and ōnori, and two types when referring to out-of-rhythm chants, sashinori and einori. Moving from a chant that is out of rhythm to one that is in rhythm is known as noru (the verb form of nori), and the reverse is referred to as nori wo hazusu, or to “remove the nori.”
