All of the performers in Noh and kyōgen, from the tachikata to the hayashikata, kōken and jiutai, carry fans, or ōgi. There are two types of ōgi, chūkei and shizumeōgi or shizumeoriōgi. The chūkei is characterized by its ginkgo-leaf-like shape, in which the ends opens while the base remains closed. The tachikata in Noh carry the chūkei when not wearing suō, and only certain shite such as Asahina carry chūkei. The paintings and colour of the slats on the chūkei (white or black) also change with each school depending on the role.
