Utai in Noh sung completely without the inclusion of the hayashi. There are no movements such as dancing on the stage, and the ai portion is typically omitted. While su-utai are some of the simplest forms of utai, they are also some of the most refined, due to their focus on the beauty of the utai. With the arrival of the Edo era, utai began to be quickly popularized among the common people, playing an important educational role, with su-utai and their shortened form, koutai, being particularly liked for these purposes. Even today, Noh is usually practiced starting from su-utai.
