A monk of low status at a temple that performs manual labor. Or, a monk of a temple. They appear as ai in Noh plays such as Dōjōji, Kurama Tengu and Saigyōzakura. Their costume consists of a mujinoshime and kukuribakama (a hakama whose hem is worn to the knees) and a kyahan worn to the feet from the knees, a mizugoromo tied at the waist, and a nohriki hood folded behind the head.
