Performance in which making the exchange of lines between actors audible is the focus of the performance. The words are not written in meter such as shichigochō, but chanted randomly in the kōchō style where each line ends with kō. One particularly famous example of mondō, or “question and answer” is the debate over Buddhist teachings between Ono no Komachi and the monks of Kōyasan in the Noh play Sotobakomachi.
