Kurai is a term that relates to the overall performance and production of Noh and kyōgen. It is used in the sense of “the kurai was light” or “the kurai was heavy” in reference to various aspects of the performance, including the vocals, movement, music, masks, costumes and overall feel of the play. Where the play is more solemn and serious, “the kurai was heavy” is used, and where it is more light and open, “the kurai was light” is used, although there are many exceptions. Where kogaki (indicating a special performance) is included, typically the kurai is heavier.
