The three characters refer to the snow of the winter, moon of the fall and flowers of the spring (cherry blossoms). They are words to express the beauty of the colours of the four seasons, a theme very near to the hearts of the Japanese. Toyotomi Hideyoshi was said to be crazy about Noh, and kept three female masks which he named “yuki(snow),” “tsuki(moon),” and “hana(flowers).” Setsugekka is seen throughout the world of Noh and kyōgen — it is the name of a play included in the rangyoku category, known for extremely high-level vocals, and a kogaki (special performance) called setsugekka no mai.
