The Utaibon is the book of words (lyrics) and musical notation for the syllables, and when they are published, plays that are performed often are notated as uchigumi, and those performed less frequently as sotogumi. When utaibon started to be published in large numbers at the start of the Edo era, since there were around 200 plays being performed, often they were published as the Uchi-hyakuban (100 Uchigumi) and Soto-hyakuban (100 Sotogumi), a tradition which continues today.
