Noh has many specialized roles including the shitekata, wakikata, hayashikata and kyōgenkata, and in special cases such as celebration, all of the actors play a different role from their usual, specialized role. This is known as Ran-noh, or “confused Noh.” It is an opportunity for the actors to brush up their craft by practicing each others’ roles, and to humble themselves. As they are unaccustomed to the roles, they often make mistakes, to the amusement of the audience, but sometimes there are also truly wonderful performances. Ran-noh performances are extremely popular, as they give the audience a rare look at the more playful, human side of the actors.
