kashiragane (頭金)

A metal fitting inserted into kashira (the end near the mouthpiece) of a nō-kan (Noh flute). The designs favoured by the owners and the subjects associated with the name of the flute are commonly expressed through carving techniques on gold or silver materials. Kashiragane contributes to the evaluation of the flute, but because it can also be removed, good ones can be often found on instruments other than the original flute.
