Chīsa-gatana (小サ刀)

A short, brimless sword carried at the waist. It is used in the role of samurai who wear certain styles of kimono, such as hitatare, suō, and naga-kamishimo. There are several types of handle: a shark handle covered with sharkskin (actually ray skin), and a rolled handle with flat braid wrapped around the shark handle. The casing is lacquered in a variety of ways. The sword is used in a suitable role, taking into account the type of handle, the casing paint, and the attached sword accessories.
