Mushiboshi (虫干し)

This is the process of taking out masks, costumes, props, and esoteric books from the storehouse and allowing them to air out to prevent moisture, mould, and insect damage, as well as inspecting and repairing them as needed. Since each of the Noh and Kyōgen families possesses a vast number of items related to the stage, the entire family is involved in the process. It is also a valuable opportunity to view the collection and a learning experience for young artists. Airing is often done during the hottest part of summer (about 18 days before the start of autumn by the lunar calendar), when the weather is sunny and dry. Although most of the process is not open to the public, the airing at Kongō Noh Theatre is open to the public and it has become an annual summer event in Kyoto.
