Sarugaku-dangi (申楽談儀)

An esoteric book of Noh. With the formal title “Zeshi rokuju igo Sarugaku dangi”, it was written by Zeami's second son, Motoyoshi, about his later years, when he is said to have achieved great success in Noh. The book covers a wide range of topics, including the historical background of each company, the artistic styles of famous actors of the time and anecdotes about them, how to create and perform Noh plays, facts about Kanjin-noh and the preceding art form “Shiki-sanban”, Noh masks and costumes, and daily tips for performers. Along with Zeami's treatise on Noh drama, “Fūshikaden” (The Flowering Spirit), the book is highly acclaimed.
