A movement form in Noh and Kyōgen acting: the actor steps forward a few feet while making a “sashi” motion pointing forward a fan or hand. The form is frequently used, either pointing to something specific or without a particular target. Shikake is often followed by the “hiraki” kata, in which the actor steps back a few feet while opening his arms to the side of his body, then pulls his open arms back to his body. It is also called “sashikomi” in some schools.
