Mio-kaeru (身ヲ替エル)

A movement form in Noh and Kyōgen acting: to turn from the current direction. Different schools and individuals interpret this differently, but the emphasis is on the movement of the mind before changing direction. Because Noh attempts to express complex inner life in simple movements, multiple acting terms are used for seemingly identical movements. Depending on the school, a simple change of stage direction can be expressed in various ways, including “muku”, “ukeru”, “hazusu”, “mio-naosu”, “mio-kaeru” and so on. The terms described in the esoteric books are rich in suggestions, and the performers need to read and understand them.
