Yakiin (焼印)

A permanent mark created by a heated metal stamp. The tool for making the branding is also called yakiin. Noh masks often have brandings on the reverse side (mostly at the forehead). These are put there by the makers, as well as by owners wishing to identify their ownership. The groove of the branding is often painted with verdigris, ultramarine or gold paint.
