Dan is a segment of a Noh play. Noh is made up of a collection of dan, and is used in phrases such as “the dan where the waki enters.” Dan are often found in hayashigoto (a part of the play where the hayashi is the main role), for example the dance chū no Mai is made up of four dan: kakari, shodan, nidan and sandan. A movement with the ōgi indicates the start of each dan, with the hayashi playing a special number. Dan is also used in reference to and individual segment of a Noh play being played individually, as in Ami no Dan in Sakuragawa and Tama no Dan in Ama.
