In scenes in which a monk or yamabushi (waki) uses magic to fend off an crazed witch (shite), inori, or “prayer,” refers to the movement in which the witch submits to the prayers of the monk or yamabushi (a movement of the hayashi). These scenes are played with the fue, kotsuzumi, ōtsuzumi and taiko. The inorichi number (rhythm and pattern) played by the taiko and the sound of the beads rubbed in prayer add to the ambiance of the scene. Inori appear in plays such as Aoi no Ue, Kurozuka (Adachigahara) and Dōjōji.
