The shōdan including the vocal sung by the waki who waits (machi) for the entrance of the nochishite. A vocal introduced in the second half of the Noh performance, the machi utai serves to focus the stage on the latter half of the performance. It can also act to inform the audience of a funeral or prayer occurring in the performance. In the Noh play Atsumori, the vocals of the waki from “This also is a funeral” to “We no longer pray for the dead,” is an example of machi utai.
