A type of lined kosode, or short-sleeved kimono, mainly worn as the innermost layer of a male character’s costume. Many atsuita include strong patterns with vibrant colours. Atsuita, the name of the cloth, became the name of the costume, although some are also made with brocade or twill cloth. Atsuita that include red colouring are called iroiri, or “with red” and those that do not are known as ironashi, or “without red.” Atsuita are also often used in kyōgen.
