In Noh and kyōgen, the word iro, or “colour,” simply refers to the colour red. For example costumes or ogi for female roles that do not include the colour red are referred to as ironashi, or “colourless” and are used for middle aged or older characters. Costumes or ogi for female roles that include the colour red are referred to as iroiri and worn and used by younger female roles. To add an air of youthful beauty to older female characters, an aged and faded red colour is sometimes used. Kokata often wear iroiri costumes.
