Padding applied to the inside of masks to make them comfortable to wear. Also called "ura ate", or just "ate," it consists of small pieces of cotton wrapped in cloth, and is attached behind the forehead and the cheeks of the mask. Actors may not use padding if a mask is comfortable to wear. When checking the comfort of masks, several factors are considered, such as how well the actor can see and speak. The most important factor, however, is being able to control the angle of the mask to make the most beautiful expressions. The name men ate is also used for the packing that protects the mask surface during storage.
