The bell, or kane, that is hung from center stage in Noh’s Dojōji is the largest prop in Noh and is quite heavy. The kōken of the shitekata that is responsible for the kane is known as the kanehiki, the kanehiki kōken, or the kane kōken. The kane kōken has the important responsibility of pulling a rope to lower the bell at the exact time the shite jumps into the bell, known as the kane-iri, and this difficult performance is usually accomplished by the shite’s instructor or a more experience performer. There are many helpers situated nearly the post to which the rope is attached.
