The boxes that contain the masks of Noh and kyōgen. In Shikisanban (Okina), menbako may also refer to the boxes that contain masks such as haku-shiki-jō, koku-shiki-jō and kagurasuzu that are brought out on stage. As the menbako used in shikisanban contain masks embodying spirits, they are often painted with beautiful designs. Boxes used to store of transport masks are also known as menbako, and paulownia is often used as a material to maintain a constant environment inside the menbako. Larger menbako used to store many masks and shaped like a chest of drawers are known as men-tansu.
