The National Noh Theatre in Sendagaya, Tokyo opened in September 1983. In addition to 60 years of independent performances, the National Noh Theatre has also hosted many public performances by Noh masters. It also supports the training of the practitioners of Noh, the study of Noh, materials collection and public performances and exhibits. The kensho (audience seating) holds 627, and a monitor displaying subtitles is installed in every seat. The subtitle monitors are used during independents performances and can be set to Japanese subtitles, English subtitles, or to off. The monitors are a favourite of those seeing Noh for the first time, displaying the verses and explaining key moments of the plays.
