In Noh and kyōgen, the performers will often step behind the curtain or set to change masks or costumes. This is known as nakairi. The period before nakairi is known as maeba, and the period after known as nochiba. The shite during the maeba is known as the maeshite, and the shite during the nochiba is known as the atoshite. The same terms are used for when the waki or tsure perform nakairi.
