Maibayash (舞囃子)

One style of Noh performance danced in montsuki or hakama (or occasionally kamishimo) in which the main parts such as the movement and dance of the shite are dropped. Performed with around five jiutai and hayashi, the shite dances alone, the lines of a performer other than the shitekata may be sung instead by the jiutai. A large fan known as a shimaiogi is used, and no mask or costume is worn. In principle no hand props are used, and in some cases a naginata, or “long sword” may be used. This simplified performance style is ideal to enjoy the raw form of the dance. In kyōgen also, aikyōgen such as Tsūen are performed in the maibayashi style.
