Hayatuzumi (早鼓)

Hayashigoto performed in Noh upon the frantic entrance of the ai performing hayauchi (a servant informing his master of urgent matters). Typically, the hayatsuzumi is performed near the end of the first half of a Noh play, with the tempo increasing and the ai entering upon the exit of the shite or the waki. Hayatsuzumi are performed with the kotsuzumi and ōtsuzumi, with the kotsuzumi continuing to play a slightly slower “po, po, po” beat, and while the ōtsuzumi does enter, the sound makes it seems like anything could happen. Hayatsuzumi are performed in plays such as Hashibenkei and Hachinoki.
