Kakegoe are the vocals performed by players of the percussion instruments, the kotsuzumi, ōtsuzumi and taiko. There are three basic types: ya, ha, and yoi. On a Noh stage where there is no performance leader, the hayashikata communicate through the kakegoe, and the performers and jiutai also receive cues from the kakegoe. Specifically, the kakegoe dictate both the meter as well as the speed and strength of the performance. In this way, kakegoe are important to more than just the percussion.
