Shoshin is a popular word and idea from one of Zeami’s treatises on Noh, Kakyo, in which he tells readers to “never forget the beginner’s spirit.” In general, this is thought to refer to the feeling of pureness when one begins a thing, but in Kakyo, Zeami stresses to remember one’s shoshin from time to time, even into old age, meaning that if we are able throughout life to always be aware of what we have to learn, we will always be able to achieve at a higher level. For performers, shoshin is a mentality of constantly improving their craft throughout life.
