Braided codes for fixing the mask to the actor's face. The round braid straps are made of silk so that they can be tied tightly and not become loose. Each strap has an eye at one end that goes through a hole at the temple of the mask; the other end goes through the eye so the strap is fastened to the mask. Depending on the school and the character, some ten different colours are used. Two pairs of straps may be used when the masks are for characters that make strenuous movements, such as the Fox in a kyōgen play.
