Surihaku is a short-sleeved kimono decorated with gold leaf, worn as the innermost layer for female roles. When an outer garment is worn, only the neckband and part of the front part can be seen. Because of this, a simplified surihaku without sleeves and bottom is sometimes used, called a munahaku. The simplified kimono reduces the volume and weight of the costume. The arrangement can be changed, for convenience, by using munahaku under the costume of the nochi-shite (second-part leading actor). Munahaku is a kind of awase (kimono with a lining).
