Surihaku is a short-sleeved kimono decorated with gold leaf, worn as the innermost layer for female roles. Surihaku has patterns of gold and silver leaf, attached with glue and paper. Therefore, it is very vulnerable to friction and sweat. Orihaku is a pattern woven with gold (or silver) threads to eliminate these shortcomings. Even so, many actors prefer surihaku to orihaku, because of the contrasting gold and silver colours. Orihaku is a kind of awase (kimono with a lining).
