A bag for keeping Noh and Kyōgen masks. Often featuring a flap with a tying strap, its shape is designed to prevent the mask from falling out. The outer material is a luxurious fabric such as gold brocade. The selection of the colour may reflect the character of the mask. For the lining, smooth silk or other smooth cloth is used to prevent any damage to the mask. Some floss silk is put between the outer cloth and the lining to prevent shocks or shaking. A tag on the front often indicates the name of the mask. There may be also notes inside the bag that describe the origin and history of the mask. Traditional treasured bags and masks together tell the history of the Noh art.
