Nishijin Ori (西陣織)

A high-class fabric woven in Nishijin, in the west of Kamigyō Ward, Kyoto. The luxurious fabrics used for Noh costumes are woven using a variety of techniques, including tate-nishiki, nuki-nishiki, donsu and shuchin, and have been produced since ancient times in Nishijin. The area produced clothing for the Imperial Court in the Heian era but was destroyed in the Ōnin War during the late Muromachi era. Textile manufacturing was restarted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and it developed greatly in the Edo period.
