Refers to horsehair. In particular, the hair of the tail is called “馬素”(material from a horse) or “馬尾毛”(hair of horsetail), with both pronounced “basu”. Noh mask-makers use horsehair mainly for implanting on the head, including the moustaches and beards of jō-men (masks of elders). In addition, the black wig hair of female characters is made from horsetail hair or human hair, while the white wig hair of old men and the “tare” (hung-down hair) on the heads of warlords are also made of horsehair.
